Baby Blocks

Our founder, Lavonia Nelson, has long held that premature babies should have access to human breast milk in order to ameliorate the rate of long-term infant hospital stays. “I never would have guessed that my child and I would undergo the difficulties of giving birth prematurely,” said Mrs. Nelson in her description of how she developed Tiny Babies Foundation. “I was fortunate enough to have been able to produce breast milk after only seven months of pregnancy, other moms weren’t so fortunate.” At the hospital Lavonia was approached by pediatric nurses asking if she would donate her milk to babies in the unit.

“When it was time to go home with my baby I noticed that other babies were nowhere near being discharged,” she said. The hospital stay for a premature baby can range from weeks to months. There is a real need for human breast milk for premature babies.

Naturally, mothers are not able to breastfeed if they are adoptive parents or in some cases if their naturally-birthed child is premature. Other reasons may include health conditions or lifestyle choices that make breastfeeding risky or detrimental to a child’s general well-being. A widely promoted alternative is to use formula or other commercially available products however; these products simply do not provide the extensive health and development benefits of breast milk. TBF was founded to provide human breast milk to non-lactating or “risk-factor” parents as a safe and highly beneficial alternative to formula or chemical based milk.
